As mentioned above, both the RAM 1500 and the Silverado were completely redesigned and the end result is impressive - both vehicles look great yet still have the heritage look of those two iconic American brands.
Engines
But let's look what's under the hood, shall we? The Ram 1500 4WD comes with a standard 305-horsepower V6 engine and can be upgraded to a 5.7 liter Hemi V8 with 395-horsepower. Also available for both engines is the eTorque mild hybrid system. The eTorque option adds a battery powered, belt-driven generator to improve performance and efficiency.
Chevy Silverado offers five engine options - the standard 285-horsepower V6, the turbo charged four cylinder with 310-horsepower, and two V8's with either 355 or 420-horsepower. The Silverado 1500 will also feature a turbocharged diesel engine option later in the year. Clearly, Chevy has more engines to choose from so it gets the edge in this category.Â
Towing Capacity
However, when it comes to towing capacity, RAM 1500 is the clear winner - it can tow up to 12,750 lbs and haul up to 2,300 lbs. This makes the Ram one of the most capable half ton pickups available. It can also be equipped with trailer blind spot monitoring to help the driver tow safely.
Chevy Silverado has a towing capacity of up to 12,000 lbs and can handle tough jobs with ease - especially when equipped with the V8 engine. It can also be equipped with advanced trailering technology which includes trailer theft notification, trailer tire pressure monitoring and tow/haul reminder.
Interior
Another major advantage the Ram 1500 has over its rival is the interior quality. RAM 1500 4WD has a spacious, comfortable cabin and high quality upgrades. The second row seating offers class-leading leg room. It can also be upgraded to include a fold down center console and reclining capabilities. The Ram 1500 can be equipped with a digital cluster display with 3D graphics and a 19-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system. It also offers buyers an optional oversized panoramic sunroof.
Silverado's interior materials look cheap compared to RAM 1500, no ifs or buts about it. With that being said, the interior has a variety of seating configurations depending on the cab style. The standard 40/20/40 front bench seat can be upgraded to bucket seats. It also has class leading front leg and headroom and has expanded its interior space to allow for maximum riding comfort
Infotainment System
The new Ram 1500 4WD comes standard with a 5-inch touchscreen. The upper trim levels also feature an 8.4 or massive 12 inch touchscreen. The touchscreen controls the Ram's Uconnect system which can also be upgraded to include navigation and Sirius XM with 360L. The upgraded system features advanced audio capabilities as well as smart phone pairing.
Similar to the RAM 1500, the new Chevrolet Silverado also features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay so you can easily access your texts, music, navigation and send and receive messages while keeping your hands on the wheel. The base model features a 7-inch color touch-screen display that controls Chevy's Infotainment 3 system. It comes with features like rear vision camera, teen driver technology, 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth audio streaming for two active devices
Safety Features
RAM 1500 4WD has more than 100 standard and available security features. Among them are blind spot monitoring, rear cross path, lane departure warning, smart cruising and guided parking all designed to keep you safe on the road. But the one that I like the most is the trailer blind spot monitoring feature that helps the driver tow safely.
Chevy offers an impressive lineup of safety features - head up display to help you keep your eyes on the road, HD surround vision, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring and forward collision alert to name a few but they pale in comparison to RAM's.
Price
RAM 1500 4WD costs less than Chevrolet Silverado. As you can see, when it comes to price the RAM is the clear winner. The new Silverado is just grossly overpriced.
Conclusion
What's the verdict? Hands down the RAM 1500 4WD is a better deal for the money. It cost less, has a better ride, more luxurious cabin and better towing and hauling capacity. In addition, if you go with the RAM 1500, you will have access to many class exclusive features including the RamBox storage system, rear fold down center console and reclining rear seats. Well worth it, don't you think?
