What about the Trax? It's a small vehicle, and it certainly looks that way from the outside. The Trax does not have a lot of space to work with, but it seems to make the most out of it. A drawback shared by both vehicles is the limited leg space in the rear but that is a common problem with vehicles in this class.
The same can't be said about the Chevy Trax. It's simply not meant for heavy off-roading. For starters, it's base trim level is not all wheel drive (it's available as an option, though). Secondly, the standard 1.4-L 4-cylinder engine is only capable of generating 138-horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. For this vehicle, that simply is not enough to give it any real spunk.
What's more, the vehicle's performance is disappointing not just off-road but in the city and on paved surfaces as well. It's slow to accelerate so getting get up to a high speed is challenge, even on the highway. The 6-speed automatic transmission also seems to slow down the Trax's driving performance since it has issues with both downshifting and upshifting.
Chevy engineers went out of their way to ensure passengers won't get bored on long hauls - the new Chevy Trax comes with a good number of infotainment features. Included on the Trax's base LS trim is the OnStar communications system, which comes complete with a WiFi hot spot feature and 4G LTE connectivity. Buyers also get the Chevy MyLink infotainment system, which is displayed on the touchscreen monitor. Bluetooth comes standard, as does smartphone app connectivity via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
But the Renegade has a lot to offer in that department, too. It's Uconnect system is user-friendly; graphics on the touch screen are clear and easy to read; browsing through menu options is simple, even for non-tech savvy drivers. And last but not least, all of the physical knobs and buttons that can be found up front on the center console are well within the driver's reach, clearly labeled, and take little effort to get used to. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard as well.
When it comes to safety features both subcompact SUVs don't disappoint. While some safety features are missing from the standard Trax line-up on the lower-level trims, the total list of available safety features is reasonable for the price. On the line-topping Premier trim, you can get forward collision alert, which lets drivers know when they need to apply the brakes in order to avoid getting into a crash. The side blind zone alert is also helpful since it lets drivers know when changing lanes could result in impact.
